Many cultures around the world are known for many things; Americans love their hamburgers and football, the Irish are known for drinking, Italians for their food, etc. I use to live in the United States and I didn’t know what Canadian’s were known for other than saying “EH” at the end of a sentence. Before I embarked on my trip around the world I decided to spend 3 months in the heart of Canada, Toronto. While I did manage to take weekend trips around the vast country one thing always seemed to stand out, their festivals.
From Montreal to Quebec City, festivals are a part of weekend life in Canada. In Toronto, the most multicultural city in the world, there is a festival every weekend. You can find a neighborhood for any type of culture in Canada, from the small country of Guyana right down to Persians and Europeans. Canadian’s also have a day off every month in the summer which can attribute to the festival culture. Canadian’s are very welcoming because they are exposed to such diversity on a day to day basis.
During the world cup there was no better place to be than little Italy which houses one of the largest communities of Italians outside of Italy. There was of course an Italian festival to go along with it. Canada’s independence day which is ironically close to July 4th, United States Independence Day, is an entire weekend of festivals and fireworks. There are so many things to do in Canada that may get overwhelmed with just the summer festivals themselves.
One of the biggest Toronto summer festivals is Caribana. It is the 3rd largest Caribbean festival in the world after the ones held in Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica. Usually held in the beginning of August you can see a culmination of cultures get together for one reason, to have a great time. Over 1.3 million people attended Caribana in Toronto Canada this year and an even bigger turnout is expected next year.
Next summer make sure to plan your trip to Canada to experience the summer festivals. You can see the festivals in Quebec that blend French culture and almost anything your heart desires in Toronto. Canada is quite a large country so make sure you set time aside for travel if planning on spending a few weekends in different cities.

I was in Toronto this year for the end of Caribana with some friends from Qatar people are out late in the streets partying… great times. Ottawa is also full of festivals year round such as Winterlude in the winter time.
